Tomorrow: ACLU, EFF Raise Civil Rights and Liberties Concerns with FAA Funding Bill
The American Civil Liberties Union and the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) will host a press call Thursday at 3pm ET/12pm PT to discuss civil rights and civil liberties issues under consideration for the Federal Aviation Administration funding bill in Congress. The bill is likely to be voted on this month.
Adding the âPreventing Emerging Threats Act of 2018â to the funding package would grant the Departments of Homeland Security and Justice enormous power to intercept, surveil, seize, and even destroy privately owned drones in a wide array of circumstances without ever once requiring approval from a judge. This provision would grant the Trump administration more surveillance powers and threaten the First Amendment and freedom of the press.
The inclusion of the âTSA Modernization Actâ would allow officers of the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) to collect biometrics information â iris scans, face scans, fingerprints, or even DNA â at domestic checkpoints, screening lanes, bag drops, boarding areas, or anywhere else it deems âappropriateâ at airports. The provision contains no privacy protections to limit the sharing or use of such information, or even ensure accuracy.
